Video games help kids learning

Video Games Aren’t the Enemy (When Used Intentionally)

This might be controversial to some — but video games have been incredibly beneficial in our house.

Our kids have played on:

  • Original Game Boy
  • Their tablets
  • And the PS5

We often play Astro’s Playroom together, and they fly through it. We’ve also played Crash Bandicoot racing and Spyro games.

And you can literally see the growth happening.

Hand-eye coordination.
Critical thinking.
Problem-solving.
Reaction time.
Patience after failing a level.

Are there negatives to screen time?
Absolutely.

When overdone, it affects:

  • Attitudes
  • Sleep schedules
  • Mental state

That’s why we limit time.
We take breaks.
We don’t allow it if behavior is off.

Technology is the future. Pretending it doesn’t exist or banning it completely doesn’t prepare them for that reality.

And here’s the part people don’t expect:

Most of the time, our 5-year-old turns down free tablet time and chooses hands-on play instead. They love being outside. They build. They pretend. They create.

Video games haven’t replaced creativity — they’ve complemented it.

Like everything in parenting, it’s about balance.
