Play with your kids and put down the noise

As parents, we are tired and forget to just put down the noise and just play.

We’re mentally juggling meals, laundry, work, schedules, dishes, emails, notifications, and the constant background noise of life. So when our child walks up, hands us a figurine, and says, “Will you play with me?” — it can feel like one more thing on the list.

And not even a structured thing.

Not a quick board game.
Not Yahtzee.
Not cards.

But full imagination mode.

Made-up voices.
Random storylines.
No rules.

That kind of play takes energy.

The other day my 5-year-old sat at the kitchen counter with me while I was mid-task and handed me one of his figurines. He asked me to play. Normally I might’ve said, “In a minute.”

But I didn’t.

I put the phone down. I ignored the mental to-do list. While my husband cooked dinner, we had an all-out character battle across the counter. Dramatic voices and all.

And he was so happy.

It pulled me completely out of task mode and into his world. And it reminded me how short this stage really is.

They are only little once.
They only live in this beautiful imagination station for a small window of time.

The dishes can wait five minutes.
The phone can sit face down.
The noise can pause.

Lesson to all of us: put down the noise and just play!
